Academic and Teaching Prizes
Presented to Certificate's Best

At this year's certificate awarding ceremony on Commencement Day, two prizes were presented to students in the Certificate of Special Studies in Administration and Management (CSS) Program, and two distinguished faculty members received awards in honor of their outstanding contributions to teaching.

Established in honor of a 1990 graduate of the CSS Program, the KATIE Y. F. YANG PRIZE is awarded annually to the international graduate who demonstrates initiative, character, and outstanding academic achievement. This year the award went to Sara Lomelin Velten. Ms. Lomelin earned straight A's in her eight CSS courses making her the international student with the highest grades and the only CSS graduate, American or international, to earn a perfect record. After graduation Ms. Lomelin and her husband relocated to San Francisco where she is currently seeking employment in management consulting.

Karen Greenwell Dechman received the DEREK BOK PUBLIC SERVICE PRIZE. This prize honors former Harvard President Derek Bok's commitment to adult continuing education and to effective advocacy of community service activities. It is awarded annually to certificate recipients at the Harvard Extension School who, while pursuing academic studies and professional careers, also give generously of their time and skills to improve the quality of life for others in the community. The prizes were established by generous gifts from the Harvard Extension Alumni Association.

Ms. Dechman's service to the community has manifested itself in a wide range of activities, including serving on the board of trustees of the Travelers Aid Society and volunteering for a women's shelter, a food transportation program, a walk for hunger, and a park improvement program. She does this, she says, "not as a hobby but as a responsibility."

The JOANNE FUSSA DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD recognizes outstanding teaching in the Harvard University Extension School's CSS Program. This year's recipient, Gunter S. Boroschek, Associate Dean and Professor of Management at the College of Management, University of Massachusetts-Boston, has been teaching Managing in the Global Economy and The Cultural Environment of International Business at the Extension School since 1992. In nominating him for this honor, one student wrote: "What makes Professor Boroschek so unique is that he brings real world issues into the classroom through the students in the class, 90 percent of whom come from foreign countries. He is an amazing person and talented instructor who has made my time at Harvard a truly international experience."

Kim Cooper received the JAMES E. CONWAY EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING WRITING AWARD, which was established in 1991 by James E. Conway, ALB '85, Director of Development Computing Service at the Harvard University Development Office. Ms. Cooper has taught Principles of Editing at the Extension School since 1995. A contributing editor at the Boston Review and the book critic for Public Radio International's The World (a co-production of WGBH and the BBC), Ms. Cooper was recently appointed Preceptor in Expository Writing at Harvard College. One of her students commented about her class: "Kim Cooper is a fabulous teacher and the class is original, valuable, and extremely interesting. I learned so much and would recommend this course to anyone who is at all curious about publishing, editing, and writing."
