Katie Y. F. Yang Prize
Derek Bok Public Service Prizes Joanne Fussa Distinguished Teaching Award Petra T. Shattuck Excellence in Teaching Award At this year's certificate awarding ceremony on Commencement Day, two prizes were presented to students in the Certificate of Special Studies in Administration and Management (CSS) Program, and two distinguished faculty members received awards in honor of their outstanding contributions to teaching. Established in honor of a 1990 graduate of the CSS Program, the Katie Y. F. Yang Prize is awarded annually to the international graduate who demonstrates initiative, character, and outstanding academic achievement. This year the award went to Gabriel Raggio. Dr. Raggio, a native of Argentina who earned his bachelor's in civil engineering and his doctorate in technical sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, earned straight As in all his CSS courses. Stella Ka-Wai Chan-Flynn and Wendy Alexandra Schmidt were awarded Derek Bok Public Service Prizes. This prize honors the commitment of former Harvard President Derek Bok to adult continuing education and to effective advocacy of community service activities. It is awarded annually to certificate recipients at the Harvard Extension School who, while pursuing academic studies and professional careers, also give generously of their time and skills to improve the quality of life for others in the larger community. The prizes were established by generous gifts from the Harvard Extension Alumni Association. Ms. Chan-Flynn, a nurse midwife, has worked for years both in her native Hong Kong and in the Boston area on behalf of poor people who need healthcare for physical and emotional problems. Ms. Schmidt, an account executive in radio sales, is active in a number of volunteer activities that benefit ill and under-privileged children and adults. The Joanne Fussa Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes outstanding teaching in the Extension School's CSS Program. This year's recipient was Arthur N. Turner, Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, Harvard Business School. "Professor Turner was insightful at all levels and an inspirational teacher," wrote one of his students this year in Organizational Behavior, a course Professor Turner has been teaching since 1992. Professor Turner was also awarded the CSS Program's Exemplary Service Award in 1996 for his loyal service to the program. The Petra T. Shattuck Excellence in Teaching Award was established by the Harvard Extension School in memory of Dr. Petra T. Shattuck, a distinguished and dedicated teacher in the program, who died of a cerebral hemorrhage in the spring of 1988. This prize is awarded annually to honor outstanding teaching in the Extension program. This year, the recipient was Henry H. Leitner. An 18-year veteran teacher in the Harvard Extension School, Henry H. Leitner, Senior Lecturer on Computer Science at Harvard University, taught Introduction to Computer Science Using C++, I last fall to 258 students, the largest course in the Harvard Extension School. In the spring he taught Introduction to Computer Science Using C++, II to 121 students, an enrollment that ranked him among the top ten courses. For the academic year he not only taught 379 students in his two classes, but also taught them well, as the student evaluations showed. |
