in Extension Studies

1960 In 1999, Helene Pilibosian published They Call Me Mustafa: Memoir of an Immigrant, the story of her father's experiences in the Armenian Genocide and in Massachusetts. This follows her second book of poems, At Quarter Past Reality: New and Selected Poems, which won the Sixth Annual Writer's Self Published Book Award in 1998.

1962 Patricia Cote continued on at the School of Education with a graduate degree in education in 1978. Patricia retired from teaching in 1992 but still fills in at Natick High School and Framingham State College.

1966 Michael T. Lynch went to La Jolla, CA, to earn an MBA in 1969. Michael has written, with William Edgar and Ron Parravano, American Sports Car Racing in the 1950s. Published by MBI Publishing, the book won the Dean Batchelor Award, presented by the Motor Press Guild for excellence in motor sports journalism. The Motor Press Guild is a professional organization of automotive writers, photographers, and broadcasters. Mr. Lynch is presently a candidate for a Master of Science in Electronic Commerce at National University in San Diego.

1972 Ruth M. McGrath retired in 1985 as an accountant for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Revenue. She traveled to the Maritimes in September 1999 and the Caribbean in January 2000.

1985 John Black spent '93-'97 in Oregon with a 10-month stint in Tokyo and a summer internship in the historic preservation office in American Samoa. He is now back in Boston, consulting in UNIX administration, practicing Aikido, and preparing for a second degree black belt. . . . From San Carlos, CA, Gary Vinant-Tang, writes that he is now a copilot on the Boeing 737 based in Los Angeles with Alaska Airlines and his flight route is from the top of Alaska to just north of Acapulco, Mexico. Gary and his wife, Patricia, welcomed a second son, their third child, on June 25, 2000.

1986 Edra Mercer has, since 1978, been teaching school and is also in a degree program for conflict resolution in education.

1989 Dianne E. Jonas earned her PhD in 1997 from Harvard University. In 1995 she was a lecturer in the department of linguistics and philosophy/department of brain and cognitive science at MIT. Since 1996 she has been an assistant professor of linguistics at Yale University.

1992 John R. Renaud writes, "I have recently begun work as a lawyer in the field of intellectual property at the law firm of Kilpatrick Stockton in Atlanta. I also play bass in a jazz band called the Highland Jazz Combo; we do weddings and other private affairs in Atlanta."

1997 Laurel Simmons graduated from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1999 and is currently director of knowledge management at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

1998 Jessie Clougherty wrote, "It's been a busy year for me . . . working at a local shelter as a domestic violence advocate. I'm in the beginning stages of the application process for graduate school. Hoping to enter Lesley College in the fall."


Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies

1989 Eva Jane N. Fridman received a PhD from Brown University in 1998 in the department of anthropology. Her research was done in the former USSR. Her dissertation was titled "Sacred Geography: Shamanism in the Buddhist Republic of Russia." She has been presenting papers, teaching, writing, and publishing in the field since 1996. During 2000-2001 she will be a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard.

1990 Tim Smith is a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force, stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, MS. His current posting is Deputy Commander 81st Training Group, which graduates more than 30,000 per year in a variety of skills including air traffic controllers, weather forecasters and observers, and hundreds of other types of skilled technicians.

1992 Andrew Stuart Berry has been teaching at Schenectady County Community College and at Fulton Montgomery Community College in upstate New York. He earned his PhD from The Union Institute, writing his dissertation in the field of "selfesteem in psychoanalysis, made practical in clinical applications." . . . Anh Ryan is currently a professional interpreter and translator with various departments for the state of Massachusetts and also teaches English as a second language to newly arrived immigrants. . . . Rosemary King finished her PhD program at Arizona State University and will teach English at the United States Air Force Academy.

1997 Kenneth Corroon received his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1999 and is currently employed at Morgan Stanley in investment banking. . . . Detlev Kullmann is the assistant to the general sales manager of a software company, which produces software for banks, near Duesseldorf, Germany.

1998 Heidi Blair-Esteves has been admitted into the graduate studies program in American studies at UMass Boston and will also be working at UMass Boston as a policy analyst in the John McCormack Institute for Public Affairs and Policy.

1999 Susan Morrison was married on October 23, 1999, and her new name is Susan M. Nerden. . . . Peter Neissa recently received the Donald J. White Teaching Excellence Award in a ceremony on May 11, 2000. Peter wrote to say, "it would not have been possible had I not gone to the Harvard Extension School. So I just wanted to say thank you."


Certificate of Special Studies in Administration and Management

1982 Two years ago, John Kelly Charlton started his own software consulting company specializing in financial services in Boston. The business has been successful enough to allow John the opportunity to race sailboats year round in Boston Harbor. He and his wife are expecting their first child in the fall of 2000 and expect their lives to continue to be busy and rewarding.

1984 Jennie Lemire recently accepted a new position with IBM Corporation in Rochester, MN. She is a senior procurement professional with responsibility for managing the outsourcing of the company's electronic card assembly and test manufacturing.

1991 Frederica Williams is presently the senior vice president for administration and finance and CFO for the Dimock Community Health Center, Inc. Dimock has an annual budget of $27 million and 600 employees. After completing the CSS Program, Frederica received an MBA in financial management from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA, in 1994. Ms. Williams is licensed as a chartered financial administrator in the UK and Wales and was recently appointed to the highest ranking as fellow of this globally renowned institute.

1997 Wayne A. Bishop, Jr., is currently contracts manager at Doble Engineering Company in Watertown, MA, and recently purchased a condo on Beacon Hill in Boston. . . . Stathis Perdikis graduated from the one-year MBA program at Babson College last May and will be working in Boston.

1999 Michael J. Rossini is currently enrolled in the evening MBA program at Babson College in Wellesley, MA.


Certificate in Museum Studies

1993 Susan Cronin Ruderman, AB '84, EdM '96, continues to work as a consultant in fundraising and executive search for nonprofits through her firm, Veritas Information Services. She counts several local museums among her clients and is happy to offer job search advice to other CMS alumni(ae).

1994 Carol Ann Dumond is presently working on a master of library science/information and media studies degree and plans to complete all course requirements by the end of the calendar year.

1996 Brenda Breed began a new position as departmental assistant in classical art at the Museum of Fine Arts.

1999 Donna Howland was recently hired as manager of visitor services and operations for The Bostonian Society. The Society was responsible for the preservation of the Old State House and now uses the building to exhibit documents and objects of significance to the history of Boston. . . . Guy Jordan is currently pursuing a master's degree in art history at the University of Massachusetts.

2000 Julia Tracey DeJong has accepted an appointment as curator of history at the Wenham Museum in Wenham, MA. . . . Heather N. Feland has been appointed director of education at the Higgins Armory.


Certificate in Publishing and Communication

1997 Maria Woods is the corporate integrity program coordinator and government relations liaison at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in New York. Very satisfied with the skills she learned in the CPC Program, she reports that "the program undid the damage law school had imparted--I was able to write clearly again!"

1999 After working as an editorial assistant for the Partisan Review, Sybil Carey is now freelancing as a copyeditor and proofreader. Her clients include Radcliffe and the Health Effects Institute in Cambridge. . . . Gustavo Cinci works as an editor coordinator for a publishing house that produces Spanish and English language books for children. . . . Shortly before graduating, Clare Kiley was promoted to the position of technical documentation supervisor in the information services department at Children's Hospital. Her responsibilities include creating a bimonthly newsletter for hospital staff for which she and her department have received two Excellence in

Technical Publications awards from the Society of Technical Communicators. . . . Luisa Kos, now residing in New York City, works as a web designer for Urbanbaby.com, an internet start-up that serves as a resource guide for new and expecting urban parents. . . . Lucinda Sears has a full-time job caring for her two-and-a-half year old and is expecting her second child this November. She does freelance translating from German to English and has continued to take Extension School courses.
