In MemoriamVirginia Forman Bader, ABE '63, of Takoma Park, Maryland, died on January 21, 2001. George T. Bazina, AAE '84, ALB '87, of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, died on June 1, 2001. He was a member of the Harvard Club of Boston. Bessie Kopel Berma, ADA '55, of West Palm Beach, Florida, died on April 16, 2001. Mrs. Charles B. Burbank, ABE '68, of Wolfboro, New Hampshire, died on June 11, 2000. John Coombe, CSS '88, of Malden, Massachusetts, died on December 19, 2000 in Huntsville, Alabama. Mary E. DeSesa, AAE '86, ALB '90, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, died on January 6, 2001. Edward J. Dowling, Sr., ABE '64, of Coral Springs, Florida, formerly of Weymouth, Massachusetts, died on December 22, 2000 in Florida. Mr. Dowling, a WWII United States Army veteran, was a retired manager with AT&T, Bell South, and New England Telephone. Sheila Marie Hegarty, ALB '99, of Everett, Massachusetts, formerly of County Cork, Ireland, died on January 9, 2001 in Dorchester, Massachusetts. At the time she received her ALB, Ms. Hegarty was the grandmother of 12. Margaret Provandie Lewis, ABE '78, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, died on July 16, 2000 at the age of 82. She was a founding member of the Harvard Women's Club. She was also a member of the Cambridge Art Association and the American Repertory Theater. Virginia Starke Loebel, ABE '68, of Naples Florida, died on November 16, 2000 in Hadley, Massachusetts. After her ABE degree, Mrs. Loebel received a master's degree in guidance from Northeastern University and went on to become internship and placement director for Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. In recent years, Mrs. Loebel volunteered at Project Help in Naples, Florida, a hotline for people in need, and at Quest, a mentoring program for middle school pupils. She was also a volunteer guidance counselor at Naples High School. Lyman Merdin, ADA '44, last known address in Charlotte, North Carolina. His death was reported on May 21, 2001. Mary Natale, ALM '93, of Boston, Massachussetts, died at her home on February 27, 2000 at the age of 53. A Back Bay activist and former lawyer, Ms. Natale dedicated her life to improving and uniting her neighborhood. Ms. Natale graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in journalism and received her JD degree from New England School of Law. Emilie C. Sheehan, ABE '64, of Newton, Massachusetts, died on June 14, 2000 in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. A talented painter and storyteller, she was a longterm member of the Newton Art Association. She staged many exhibits and won awards for her writing. Carl Beeman Umanzio, ADA '34, most recently of Orinda, California. His death was reported on June 19, 2001. Eleana Vasyliunas, ABE '71, of Tacoma, Washington, died on May 22, 2001. Alvin K. Williams, CSS '00, Assistant Director, Professional Connection at the Harvard Alumni Association, died on December 24, 2000. Mr. Williams had previously taught, advised, and counselled at-risk adolescents in New York City and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and for the past two academic years, he served as a nonresident tutor in Dunster House. Mr. Williams was instrumental in converting the Professional Connection from a desktop database maintained and searched by HAA staff to a web-based tool maintained and searched by alumni(ae) themselves. © 2001 by the President and Fellows of Harvard College Comments.
