2002-03 HEAA Year in Pictures

Thanks to the work of Jeffry Pike, our official Extension School photographer, and Robert Pagliarulo, CAD '85, ALM '92, faithful chronicler of alumni and alumnae gatherings, we are treated again this year to a profusion of images. (For readers who missed Jeff Pike's profile of Bob Pagliarulo, "A Flash at Close Range," see last year's Alumni Bulletin.)

The HEAA sponsored seven meetings in 2002–2003, making it our busiest year ever with three new events--a tailgate party before a Harvard football game, a Harbor Island Picnic near historic Fort Warren on George's Island, and an all-Beethoven program by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra in Sanders Theatre.

October 17, 2003: Urban Safety, Post 9/11

This year began with an excursion into the dangerous world in which we live today: a panel discussion of homeland security on urban campuses, featuring Cambridge Police Commissioner Ronnie Watson and Harvard University Chief of Police Bud Riley. Prior to the meeting, a portrait of Dean Michael Shinagel was unveiled in the Grossman Common Room.

Tailgating

October 19, 2002: Harvard Crimson vs. Northeastern Huskies

Good spirits and lots of food helped us cheer the Harvard Crimson football team as they were defeated by the Northeastern University Huskies. The Crimson nearly won over cross-town rival and nationally ranked Northeastern, but a fumbled pitch in the final minute allowed the No. 15 Huskies to escape with a 17–14 triumph.

Mark Plotkin

November 2, 2002: The Killers Within: The Deadly Rise of Drug-Resistant Bacteria

A slide presentation of The Killers Within: The Deadly Rise of Drug-Resistant Bacteria by ethnobotanist and activist Dr. Mark Plotkin, ABE '79, was held in the Science Center and attracted students from the biological sciences and the Schools of Public Health and Medicine.

Pitches

December 12, 2002: The Radcliffe Pitches

The Radcliffe Pitches, Harvard's first all female a cappella ensemble, graced us with holiday melodies both sacred and profane.

January 30, 2003: The Boston Landmarks Orchestra

The HEAA sponsored a free all-Beethoven program by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra in Sanders Theatre. Under the baton of Charles Ansbacher, the concert featured Russian piano virtuoso Victoria Korchinskaya-Kogan, whose performance of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto brought the capacity audience to its feet after the first movement--highly unusual for classical music concertgoers.

Comic Relief February 27, 2003: Comic Relief

In the Theatre Room of the Harvard Faculty Club, a group of talented young actors from the American Repertory Theatre performed great comic scenes from the stage.

Picnic

May 10, 2003: Harbor Island Picnic

The weather was beautiful for the first Harbor Island picnic near historic Fort Warren on George's Island. After a scenic boat cruise along the Boston waterfront, we toured the island, ate a box lunch, and enjoyed the fabulous weather.

Alumni Banquet

June 3, 2003: The Alumni Banquet

A fitting culmination to the year, alumni(ae) enjoyed meeting the eight 25-year honorands and five newly elected officers of the Association. Also available on this website are photos and addresses by Dean Shinagel and Professor John D. Spengler.
