'05 Phyllis G. Sexton, a retiree from the Harvard Business School, earned her AA degree at 71 years young. “It’s never too late!”

'04 J. Foster Kerrison is pursuing a master’s degree through the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and the University of Bath.

'05 Lilian Ajayi is working as an aide for the Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations.

Monica Brooker was admitted to the MA program in clinical psychology at Columbia University.

Tabatha Flores is attending Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London to earn her master’s in art business.

Yan Li is attending Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School, University of Maryland.

David Perez was accepted to George Mason, Valparaiso, and Lewis & Clark law schools. He is attending Valparaiso.

Christopher Rappley was accepted to the MA program in public administration at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

James Song was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to research the efficacy of hypnosis and meditation in AIDS patients in Uganda.

Panayotis Yannakogeorgos was admitted to the MA program in history at Rutgers University.

'04 Francisco Isaza was hired by Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences computer services as a web programmer/developer.

Ria Riesner is studying intensive Arabic at the American University in Cairo, Egypt. She received the prestigious Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar award to pursue graduate studies next year in Beirut, Lebanon.

'03 Robert G. Beeman, Jr., co–founder and partner, Team the Agency Inc., Boston, is entering the Nuclear Medicine Technology program at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

'02 Amit Chatterjee is working in the information technology industry in Asia. “My post–ALB has been a crazy ride. I’ve been to India, Japan, and am likely to make a brief trip to China and Singapore later this year. My education is serving me well. I just opened an IT consulting firm with a business partner in New Delhi. Having already secured our first clients, the next few months should prove to be quite interesting. Pursuing the ALB at Harvard Extension School helped me develop a broad range of skills and experiences that I’m finding are readily applicable in the business world.”

Pamela Whitehead earned her MA in art history from the University of Massachusetts this past June.

R. Richard Wojewodzki will be pursuing his PhD in education at Catholic University of America this fall.

'01 Eric Forster is pursuing his PhD in medieval history at Saint Louis University.

Luis Miranda received a master’s degree in professional management from the University of Miami.

J. Vin Vera earned an advanced degree at Harvard Business School.

'00 Isa Seow received a master’s degree from Cambridge University, England.

'99 Adam Cogley is pursuing an MBA at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan Flagler Business School.

'98 Caesar Sodre earned an MBA from Babson College.

'96 Manuel A. Roman–Lacayo is earning a PhD in anthropology at the University of Pittsburg. “Thanks to the Extension School’s invitation, I sought and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for research in Nicaragua. After two years in Nicaragua I became the youngest–ever director of the National Museum. I applied for a PhD program and was accepted to all the schools I applied to. I chose to attend the University of Pittsburgh, where I was offered the Heinz Fellowship in Latin American Archaeology. Later, I was the recipient of a National Science Foundation grant to support my dissertation research. I am quite confident that none of this would have been possible were it not for my time at the Extension School. Moreover, I feel that my confidence to pursue any goal is firmly rooted in what I learned at the Extension School.”

'95 John Bernard is pursuing his MD at Tulane University School of Medicine.

'91 Paul Kewene–Hite says, “Since graduating from Harvard, I’ve served as a technology evangelist at Apple Computer and as the director of strategic planning and new business development at NEC Computers. I’ve served as president of a multinational software company with offices in the Silicon Valley and Israel, as well as other senior executive leadership roles with several Silicon Valley companies. I’m currently a partner in The Hatchery, LLC, which is a global business consultancy with headquarters in Bend, Oregon. I’m an officer in my local Harvard Club and a member of the Harvard Schools Committee, for which I interview students for Harvard College admissions. I remain an advocate and fan of Harvard and the Extension School. Harvard and the Extension School were my ideal fertile field for growth and the perfect springboard for my career and life. Thank you again for your excellent support while I was a student.”

'89 Casey Lartigue, EdM ’91, is a senior manager of research and communications at the DC–based philanthropic organization Fight for Children. Lartigue is also co–editor of the book Educational Freedom in Urban America. In addition to his professional career, Lartigue is a board member of the Washington Scholarship Fund’s Executive Network, the National Board of Directors of the Black Alliance for Educational Options, and he serves on the Board of Trustees of the (proposed) Dupont Circle International Academy in Washington, DC. “In my professional career and volunteer work I focus on creating quality educational opportunities for young and disadvantaged people. I will never forget the opportunity I had at the Harvard Extension School to be taught by professors who are leading scholars in their respective fields. One thing I recall about my time at the Harvard Extension School is meeting so many motivated people with diverse backgrounds and careers.”

'68 Paul Smith has recently moved from New Haven, Connecticut, to Charlottesville, Virginia, where he continues to write and coach adult writers.


Master of Liberal Arts in Information Technology

'01 Nick Patler had his thesis, “Jim Crow and the Wilson Administration: Protesting Federal Segregation in the Early Twentieth Century,” published as a book by the University Press of Colorado. His talk about the book at the University of Virginia was filmed by C–Span Book TV.

'91 Nita Lamborghini who also holds a PhD, is entering her eighth year at Northern Essex Community College as assistant dean of college life.

'02 Martin Robert Schwarz is currently working as an account manager with Siemens Business Services in Vienna, Austria.

'88 Jean E. Fox Tree and Brian Schwarzmann welcomed their daughter, Edelein, into the world. Bubbly Jeike (6) adores her peaceful baby sister.



Alumni Spotlight: Eugene A. Cronin

Kamilla ElliottEugene A. Cronin, AA ’84, ALB ’87, celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends at the Chateau Restaurant in Waltham on July 15, 2005. A 1933 graduate of Newton High School, Gene has been a lifelong resident of West Newton. He has served as alderman and been a member of many community organizations, including the Board of Public Health, Newton Historical Society, Newton Free Library, Veterans Council, and American Legion Post 48. He and his five brothers served in the US Army during World War II.

Cronin founded the insurance business that he still runs with his son Walter. He began his studies at Harvard Extension School in the 1980s. “I was always the first student to arrive in class, and the last one to leave. The students were passionate about learning. I tried to take the toughest courses—I felt so lucky to be studying at Harvard.”

After taking Peter Gomes’s Harvard: Idea and History as a Special Student in Harvard College, Cronin wrote to President Bok, proposing that the course be made a core requirement for all Harvard students. Always an omnivorous reader, Cronin earned his bachelor’s degree at the Extension School at the age of 71.

Dr. Toni–Lee Capossela is writing a biography of John U. Monro, former Harvard College dean and lecturer in expository writing at the Harvard Extension School in the 1950s and ’60s.
