In Memoriam

Andrea Harvey, a 28–year–old Extension School student and math teacher at East Boston High School, died February 23. The Extension School has established the Andrea Harvey Thesis Scholarship, which covers the cost of completing the master’s thesis in the Mathematics for Teaching Program. Contributions to the Harvey Scholarship may be sent to Karen Droisen, 51 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138. Checks should be made out to Harvard University, in memory of Andrea Harvey.

Thomas J. C. Raymond, a legendary teacher of effective business writing in both the Harvard Business School and the Harvard Extension School for a span of 55 years, died on September 29, 2005, in Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Massachusetts, at the age of 88.

He taught at the Business School from 1950 to 1987, and for the past quarter century he taught the popular course Effective Written Communication at the Harvard Extension School. Last June he was among the 25–year honorands recognized at the annual Harvard Extension School Alumni Banquet, receiving a medal and a Harvard chair for his many years of distinguished teaching.

During his long teaching career, Professor Raymond estimated that he taught more than 18,000 students, observing that as a teacher “it’s a wonderful way to extend yourself, to have an influence that goes beyond you.” Even though he broke his hip in his last year of teaching, he taught from a wheelchair and hired a driver to ferry him from his home in Orleans to Harvard Yard to teach his classes.

Christina M. Hamilton, AA ’88, ALB ’93, a beloved Extension School colleague from 1987 to 2003, died following a car accident in October in Scotland. She served as a staff assistant in academic services, and as assistant director of the ALM Program. After earning associate’s and bachelor’s degrees from the Extension School and a master’s from Harvard Graduate School of Education, Chris was attending an MBA program at Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, Scotland. Donations in her memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity.

Dennis N. Skiotis, who directed undergraduate studies at Harvard’s history department and taught military history both at Harvard College and the Extension School, died last October after a long struggle with leukemia. He was 67. His lectures on military history were popular among students, and during his tenure, he received the Dean’s Letter of Commendation for Excellence in Teaching four times.

Paul E. Keating, ABE ’71, of Alna, Maine, died on February 28, 2005. He was the husband of Helen G. Keating.

Josephine B. “Canny” O’Brien, AAE ’75, died at home in Somerville, Massachusetts, on May 14, 2005, at the age of 93.

Sharon L. Johnston, ALB ’04, passed away in November 2004 from cancer.
