For many years, students have asked "Do you offer Extension School courses in the summer?" In the past, the answer has always been "yes and no." Yes, we offer Summer School courses, but no, there is no summer term of the Extension School. But this year, in response to student requests, the answer is "yes and yes." In addition to the 250 courses sponsored by the Harvard Summer School (see back panel), the Division of Continuing Education will run a small pilot program of proseminars, seminars, and CSS courses sponsored by the Harvard Extension School. The new summer program is designed for Boston-area adults who are looking for reasonably priced professional courses offered in the evening. The courses will run from June 24 to August 16, meet two nights a week for two and one-half hours, and cost the same as 1995-96 Extension School courses. "We hope to reach new markets and provide better service to our current students," said Dean Mary Higgins. "Summer may be the best, or only, time for some people to pursue professional advancement. For example, high school teachers may now be able to complete a master's degree (ALM), doing all of their work--from introductory research methods proseminar to thesis--over several summers." This first summer, Extension plans to offer proseminars in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, and a seminar in psychology. Topics covered will include American literary realism; politics and society in 20th-century Western Europe; and principles of research design. The Extension School also will offer a small number of CSS courses. According to Dean Raymond Comeau, the tentative schedule includes topics in information technology, organizational behavior, and marketing. To request a brochure and registration form for the 1996 Extension School summer term, see the 1996 Extension School World Wide Web site. The registration deadline is June 5 and classes begin June 24.
