Harvard Extension School and CHER

Most members of the Harvard community in general and the Harvard Extension School in particular are not aware that for the past seven years the Continuing Higher Education Review (CHER), the official journal of the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA), has been edited and published at 51 Brattle Street, the headquarters of the Division of Continuing Education (DCE).

Previously, CHER was produced at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, under the editorship of Dr. Daniel W. Shannon, Dean of Continuing Education, and his able staff. Dean Michael Shinagel served as book review editor, and when it came time to find a new home for CHER, Harvard Extension agreed to take on the assignment on a two-year trial basis.

Despite the heavy commitments of the Harvard DCE staff, CHER has flourished here because of the professional commitment of the people involved in this enterprise. Dean Shinagel has switched from book review editor to editor. Dr. Wayne Ishikawa has served with distinction as associate editor, and key individuals from the Office of Communications and Marketing have also contributed their time: Linda Cross, director; Nora Cameron, associate director; Julie Morse, assistant editor; and Jeffry Pike and Bob Sweeney, graphic designers.

In the past seven years CHER has become recognized as the premier publication in the field of continuing higher education. An annual publication, it features timely and provocative essays and addresses on higher education, articles on aspects of continuing education, UCEA news, and book reviews. In addition, the scope of CHER extends well beyond the United States to include news of developments in continuing higher education in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and other parts of the world.
