Greetings from the Harvard campus. This year, 2007, has been a special one at Harvard and will probably be remembered in Harvard history. It has ushered in our first woman president (Drew Gilpin Faust, dean of Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute) and final plans for a 250-acre campus expansion in Allston and Brighton, just across the Charles River, which will turn Harvard into a diamond along the Charles. Both of these events will help shape the University’s future for years to come. I am pleased to be in contact with you through this issue of Management News—formerly CM News—now in its tenth year of publication. The name of the newsletter has changed because, as some of you know, the Extension School now offers two graduate management programs, the Certificate in Management (CM) and the Master of Liberal Arts (ALM) in Management. The name Management News reflects the scope of both programs. My hope is that you will find some food for thought in the first three pieces (one article and two interviews) on the topics mental models, workplace performance and talent management, and philanthropy. We thank management instructors James Fitchett, Melissa Brown, and Frank White for their contributions to these pieces. I also hope you will enjoy catching up on news from your fellow CM graduates in Alumni News and learning about the Extension School’s student association in the short piece written by management programs liaison Nicki De La Rosa. The academic year 2006–07 was another successful one for our programs, with enrollments reaching an all-time high. We offered a strong curriculum, consisting of 71 courses representing a range of management topics. On the social side, we continued our tradition of fall and spring receptions for candidates and guests in the library of the Harvard Faculty Club, one of the club’s most beautiful rooms. James Fitchett, chief executive officer of ProVentive Inc. and co-instructor of MGMT E-143 Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Business Transformation, was our featured speaker on October 20. He delivered a talk titled “Seeing the Familiar with New Eyes” to a packed house. A copy of the talk is the opening piece of this newsletter issue. At our spring reception on March 16 Dr. Michael Gordon, chief executive officer of AngelDeals.com and instructor of MGMT E-145 Global Corporate Entrepreneurship and Competitive Success, delivered the speech “Entrepreneurship and Negotiation: A Case in Book Writing.” He also attracted a full house, despite a nor’easter that developed that afternoon and lasted through the night, leaving Boston covered in nine inches of snow. The 2006 Certificate Commencement ceremony last June 8 took place under sunny skies (it never rains on a Harvard Commencement, remember?), and Lowell Hall was again filled to capacity with certificate graduates and their relatives and guests. The CM Class of 2006 numbered 150, including 74 international graduates representing 30 countries. The five leading countries were Brazil (12 graduates); Mexico (7); Argentina and Canada (6 each); and Chile, Colombia, and Turkey (4 each). Outstanding graduates and faculty were recognized for service and achievement. Betty King Cuyugan was the recipient of the Derek Bok Public Service Prize, which recognizes “creative initiatives in community service or long-standing records of civic achievement.” Diana Huidobro from Chile won the Katie Y.F. Yang Prize, recognizing “the initiative, character, and outstanding academic achievement of an international student in the CM Program.” Tamara Vargas-Ortiz won the Harold V. Langlois Outstanding Scholar Award. And Linda Delauri, instructor of COMM E-130 Project Development and Grant Proposal Writing, received the Joanne Fussa Distinguished Teaching Award. We were honored to have Dr. Myra S. White, research associate at Harvard Medical School and CEO of the consulting firm Behavior Scientific, as our guest speaker. She spoke to graduates about the road to success. Ms. White has been an instructor in the area of human resource management since 1999. In closing, I want to remind you that Management News appears online only. If your e-mail address changes, please notify us at cm@hudce.harvard.edu so you will receive a link to the newsletter next year. Finally, I join the management programs staff, Delia Gerraughty and Donna Clark, in wishing you a happy and successful 2007. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
