I Walk Alone at Night

Timothy Oppelt

I walk alone at night.
It is dark and I am dark,
and perfect melancholy
for a while rules the world.
But I do not disappear
because sad is great or good.
My loneliness kills me daily
as does my silence.
I walk alone at night
and hide from people
and even from persons.
But I do not want to be lonely.
I wish for love and hope
and all of the greatness of friendship.
I walk alone at night
hoping for companionship absent
and lacking in everyday life.
I wish for my comforting home
and the imaginary people there.
I walk alone at night
with my pen and paper
in black and embracing it
in action and in clothing.
I walk alone at night
hoping that the ones I want
will approach me in mid stroll
and ask to read my work.
