A painting in the Peabody Museum
Told tales of true American ways:
Of natives, noble and calm
Cooking in iron; grinding maize,
With cats, chickens, and children
Around the hearth, humming.
Market and burden baskets of cane
All proving an umbilical chain,
Linking sweet roots of baskets
To peat from the bogs of the Blaskets.
When pots stood empty,
Generous-natured Choctaws
Showered mercy on starving man,
Sharing their bread with Ireland.
