CARC Corner
Each semester, the Career and Academic Resources Center (CARC) offers more than 25 academic, career, graduate school, and study abroad workshops. This spring we offered two career discussion groups: Preparing for a Career as a Massachusetts Public School Teacher and Becoming a Lawyer and Much More. If you’re interested in either of these career choices but didn’t have a chance to attend the sessions, you have the opportunity to view them both online because each session was videotaped. When listening, be sure to have a paper and pen handy because the speakers offered interesting advice about how to be sure that these careers are right for you.
Preparing for a Career as a Massachusetts Public School Teacher
Teaching is a very demanding job; speak with professionals in the field to ensure you have a realistic idea of the expectations, challenges, and rewards.
This discussion group is for students considering a career in teaching at the elementary, middle, or high school level. A representative from the Massachusetts Department of Education explains the three levels of licensure (provisional, initial, and professional) and discusses the necessary steps to certification, including a brief overview of the communications and literacy skills test and subject matter tests. A panel of teachers from a wide range of educational settings (public, private, and charter schools) shares some of teaching’s joys and challenges. Substitute teaching as an interim step is also discussed.

Becoming a Lawyer and Much More
If you want to become a lawyer, go to Cambridge Court, or any city courthouse, and just sit, watch, and learn.
This discussion group is for students considering law school and a career in law. Mark Weber, from the Harvard Law School's Career Services Office, talks about what led him to become a lawyer and discusses other careers in law. In addition, a practicing attorney shares real-life experiences on the job and provides examples of lawyers whose careers have taken them down different paths.
